Gwinnett County, GA — The Gwinnett County Police Department is encouraging residents and job seekers to consider a career in law enforcement or public safety support, highlighting competitive pay, strong benefits, and opportunities for career advancement.
According to the department, the recruitment effort aims to attract individuals who are interested in building long-term careers while serving the community. Officials say the department offers extensive training, modern equipment, and professional development opportunities designed to help employees succeed throughout their careers.
“The Gwinnett County Police Department invests in your professional development,” the department stated in a recent recruitment announcement. Training programs include instruction at state-of-the-art facilities led by instructors certified through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.). Many instructors also hold specialized certifications in defensive tactics, firearms training, advanced driving techniques, and other law enforcement disciplines (Gwinnett County Police Department, 2026).

Beyond initial training, the department offers opportunities to join specialized units across a wide range of law enforcement fields. These teams include computer forensics, K-9 operations, aviation, technology research, accident investigations, SWAT, motors, crime prevention, and hazardous devices. Officials say these specialized divisions allow officers to develop unique skills and advance within the department.
The Gwinnett County Police Department also highlights its comprehensive benefits package as part of its recruitment effort. Benefits for employees include health care coverage, tuition reimbursement, education incentives, hiring incentives, and full pay during training. Police officers may also qualify for a take-home patrol vehicle, depending on their assignment and department policies.
In addition to sworn police officers, the department employs hundreds of civilian professionals who support daily operations. These civilian roles play a critical part in helping the agency maintain public safety services across the county.
Civilian career opportunities include positions in emergency management, crime scene investigation, evidence processing, customer service for records and permit units, intelligence analysis, process analysis, and administrative support. According to the department, nearly 300 civilian employees work alongside approximately 930 sworn officers and more than 120 communications officers.
The hiring process for civilian positions typically involves multiple steps to ensure applicants meet the department’s professional standards. The initial phase includes reviewing an applicant’s criminal history and driving record, followed by an oral interview. Applicants who advance may undergo reference checks, employment and education verification, and drug or medical screenings. Some specialized roles may also require psychological evaluations.
Officials say the entire hiring process generally takes between 45 and 60 days, depending on the position and the number of applicants. Because of the competitive nature of the roles, some positions remain open only for a limited time before applications close.
The department says it seeks candidates who demonstrate strong judgment, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, integrity, and compassion. Officials emphasize that these qualities are essential for officers and civilian staff who work directly with the community.
“Our department believes in modern policing,” the agency stated. “That includes professionalism, community engagement, officer wellness, and the use of updated technology to keep our community safe” (Gwinnett County Police Department, 2026).
