James Van Der Beek Dies at 48 After Cancer Battle

Gwinnett County, GA — February 12, 2026

Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his starring role in Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48 following a battle with cancer, according to statements shared by his family.

Van Der Beek was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023. He largely kept his illness private for more than a year, later describing the experience as a “full-time job” that profoundly reshaped his perspective on life, faith, and identity.

In late 2024, Van Der Beek began speaking more openly about his condition, sharing reflections on mortality and self-worth that resonated with fans across the country. In one of his final public messages, he wrote, “I am worthy of God’s love simply because I am.”

As medical expenses mounted, Van Der Beek took steps to support his family. In November, he auctioned memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek, raising approximately $47,000 to help cover treatment costs. A GoFundMe campaign created to support his wife, Kimberly Brook, and their six children later surpassed $1 million, highlighting both the financial strain of serious illness and the outpouring of public support.

Tributes poured in following news of his death from former co-stars, fans, and public figures, many praising his openness, resilience, and willingness to speak candidly about the realities of cancer and the challenges of the U.S. healthcare system.

Van Der Beek is remembered not only for his contributions to television and film, but also for his honesty and grace during his final years. He is survived by his wife and six children.
